La Saint-Sylvestre ou le réveillon du jour de l’an!
Le fameux réveillon du Jour de l’an, ce point tournant du calendrier, se nomme également le réveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre. Mais qui est donc Saint-Sylvestre et pourquoi le dernier réveillon de l’année porte-t-il son nom? Et bien voici ce qu’il en est!
Sylvestre fut le 33e pape qu’est connue la chrétienté (314 à 335), il fut un personnage important dans le processus d’acceptation de la religion chrétienne par les Romains. Emprisonné pour avoir hébergé un chrétien durant la période de conflit religieux avec les Romains, il fut libéré et ensuite ordonné prêtre. L’histoire raconte qu’il est à l’origine de la construction de nombreux monuments chrétiens (Saint-Pierre de Rome, La Basilique de Latran, l’église du Saint-Sépulcre, Sainte-Sophie à Constantinople, etc.). Il est également reconnu pour de multiples guérisons, des miracles et surtout pour avoir aidé à instaurer un début de tolérance du peuple Romains envers la chrétienté. Il fait partie des premiers saints à avoir été canonisé sans avoir été un martyr.
Le réveillon du Jour de l’an porte le nom de « Réveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre » en l’honneur de ce grand Saint décédé le 31 décembre 335, jour où les Romains avaient la coutume de célébrer la fin de l’année en cours.
Ici en Acadie, c’est la tradition lors du réveillon du jour de l’an de se réunir en famille, de bien manger, chanter et danser! Moments de gratitude pour l’année qui s’achève et moments d’espoir pour toutes les possibilités qu’offre la nouvelle année qui commence!

New Year’s Eve or Saint-Sylvester
The famous New Year’s Eve, a turning point in the calendar, is also called “la Saint-Sylvestre”. Who is Saint-Sylvester and why is the last family and friends gathering of the year named after him?
Sylvester was the 33rd pope of the Christendom (314 to 335). He was a key figure in the process of acceptance of Christians by the Romans. Imprisoned for harboring a Christian during the period of religious conflict with the Romans, Saint-Sylvester was freed and then ordained priest. History tells us that he is responsible for the construction of many Christian monuments (St. Peter’s in Rome, the Lateran Basilica, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, St. Sophia in Constantinople, etc.). He’s also known for numerous healings, miracles and above all, for his help in the establishment of tolerance by the Roman people towards Christianity. He was one of the first Saints to be canonized without being a martyr.
New Year’s Eve is called Saint-Sylvester in honor of this great Saint who died on December 31st, the day of which the Romans used to celebrate the year end.
Here at home, it’s tradition on New Year’s Eve to get together with family and friends, eat well, sing and dance! It’s a moment of gratitude for the year coming to an end. It is also a moment of hope for all the possibilities that the new year has to offer!
